Character Name: Tsukikage (of the Fuuma Clan)

Age: 16 (Age vague)

Canon: Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc V

Canon Point: Episode 73

Character Information: http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Tsukikage

Personality: Tsukikage is a teen shrouded in mystery, and little is known about him. To date, his last name, family history, and even his full face have not been seen. However, what we do know is that he’s a brave, loyal and committed warrior; a young man who is dedicated to his mission, his cause, his school, and his family.

What someone would first notice about Tsukikage is that he’s serious - comically so, in fact. In his first appearance, Tsukikage was seen calmly standing in the duel arena in the first round of the Maiami Championship, not at all bothered by the tiny Mieru Hochun turning up late and declaring he’d lose while standing on the commentator’s booth (he won in the end). Though he is not emotionless in any sense, and he is not above being startled by the strange actions of people around him, Tsukikage generally keeps a very controlled demeanour, acting as professionally as a real ninja could be expected to.

Tsukikage is a mild deadpan snarker, but is mostly brutally honest in what he says. A funny example appears in episode 73: when Yuya asks him to tell Reira that he said "thanks", Tsukikage says "impossible" and the dramatic, high tension music just drops with a record scratch. Tsukikage then repeats it is impossible because Reira has returned to a council meeting and Tsukikage can't get in contact with him until he leaves with Reiji again.

Like many ninja in anime, Tsukikage uses "Sessha" (拙者), which is a first person pronoun loosely translated to "your humble servant". It is a very polite form of address, symbolic of his relationship with his clients. This relationship is also reflected in the way he addresses Reiji and Reira; as he is employed by the Akaba family, he addresses both brothers with "-dono" (殿) which is a way of referring to someone of higher rank without lowering his own status. The term is also interesting because it is higher than using "-sama" (which is more common) since it means "Lord", and is often used for those who command more respect. However, they differ on how they treat the speaker's worth. The term is used with business partners and it is also a term used for those you admire — both of which are uses that apply here.

Despite being generally quiet, it’s clear from his louder actions that Tsukikage is very kind and courteous. In episode 45, when he and his brothers use smoke bombs to distract invading Academia forces and carry Yuzu and Serena respectively, we can see Tsukikage carry Yuzu in a bridal carry. This is a lot more respectful to her in contrast to his brother, who carries Serena over his shoulder. His kindness is especially highlighted in two particular gestures featured in episode 73. The first is when Reira came out to apologise to Tsukikage for being unfair to him - for backing out of the tournament and making Tsukikage take his place (despite it being Reiji’s plan all along) while selfishly wanting him to lose. Tsukikage kneels down so he levels himself with Reira, and wordlessly accepts the boy’s message and apology without hesitation or judgement. The second instance is after he passes on Reira’s message of encouragement to Yuya, where he gives Yuzu a message from Yuya even though there is a risk of being caught outside of the detention facility. This message is of particular importance to both Yuzu and Yuya, but Tsukikage had no reason to deliver it, nor any order from the Akaba brothers to carry out any wishes Yuya had. He does it out of the kindness of his heart.

Despite being a ninja and sticking out in the group of Lancers, Tsukikage is the least flashy of them, and tends to take a back-seat role in all things. Even at rest, he comes across as a defensive, determined character, as he’s constantly folding his arms. A lot of this self-control is implied to be because of the teachings and guidelines of the Fuuma Duel School, which he addresses as the "Fuuma Clan". The Fuuma Duel School specifically brings their students up to be ninja, and both he and his older brother, Hikage, attended this school for an indeterminate period of time.

The nature of the Fuuma Clan is also shrouded in mystery, but Tsukikage states that "When one member is too weak, another one comes to his aid and takes his place". This is shown in Tsukikage's duels, and he predominantly uses Tribute Summoning. Tsukikage also outlines an important ideal of the school that both he and his brother follow with their lives -

"Once we take up a mission, we will stake our lives to complete it."

Out of all the "Lancers" chosen by Reiji Akaba, Tsukikage is the only one specifically hired to be there to defend Standard Dimension from the onslaught of the Fusion Dimension.

We see that Tsukikage is a professional (ninja) in that he acts in a professional manner at all times. He isn’t embarrassed, nor does he act in a perverted fashion when Serena and Yuzu go to exchange clothes in episode 46, instead respectfully turning away from them and keeping watch until the girls split up.

Tsukikage is ridiculously faithful to his mission, due to the guidelines of the Fuuma Clan. When Reiji Akaba hired him to protect Serena from the Fusion Dimension, he defended her and Shun Kurosaki at all costs, almost resulting in his own defeat at the hands of the Obelisk Force. If not for the intervention of Shingo Sawatari, we would have seen that Tsukikage was ready to face death with dignity.

In a less dire situation, he was shown to continue to defend Serena as per the wishes of his client, Reiji, when Serena revealed to the group that she was from Academia (the Fusion Dimension’s main force).

Upon entering the Synchro Dimension, Tsukikage rarely left Reiji’s side unless ordered to, always shadowing him a few metres back and keeping watch on the situation at hand.

Tsukikage often remains in the background, listening in on the plot, and he follows Reiji’s orders as soon as he’s given them (shown twice in episode 67 where Reiji tells him not to chase Reira when Reira ran, and when taking Reira’s place in the tournament after Reiji asked him at the last minute). From episode 73, we learn that he does not follow Reiji mindlessly, as he states that "I would have abandoned [Reiji-dono] long ago if he abandoned his like-minded comrades". Despite other characters’ reservations about him, he has a lot of faith in Reiji. This can be seen in how seriously Tsukikage takes his work, rarely showing emotion or hesitation, even when his brother was carded by Sora Shinuin (in the world of Yu-Gi-Oh, to be carded is equivalent to being killed). Several characters have been carded before and there are always strong feelings of grief or anger by those who see their cards (yelling, screams, tears, etc), even from those unrelated to the victim. However, Tsukikage does not visibly have this reaction, not because he doesn’t care, but because as a professional, he keeps his emotions to himself and understands the risks at hand. Almost thirty episodes pass before we get a glimpse how he feels about Hikage being carded.

Though Tsukikage is very professional and serious in all he does, there are some instances where he loses his cool, such as when he dueled Shinji Weber; specifically, when Shinji insulted his clan and the memory of his brother. Tsukikage is respectful to his opponents (not underestimating the Commons' strength while understanding their point of view) but he is also very honest in his own beliefs, and hearing Shinji insult the Fuuma Clan leads him to show anger for the first time in the series.

This instance occurred when Shinji likened his role as a ninja to that of the Synchro dimension's Security as "a good for nothing bunch who merely bowed to [his] lord". Tsukikage was so riled by Shinji inadvertently insulting his brother’s sacrifice and his memory that it came through in his face, and in his voice; from this we can infer that he felt considerable pain and grief when his only known family member fell, but chose to conceal it for the sake of the mission. His anger did not distract him from his mission during the duel either; though he could have seized the win, he instead threw the duel as per Reiji’s orders, showing his loyalty to his cause once again despite wanting to make Shinji pay for his insolence.

Reiji commanded Tsukikage to lose so he could report the activities of the Lancers who are trapped in the Synchro Dimension’s underground garbage facility. From his loss until episode 73, Tsukikage collected information regarding the Synchro Dimension’s Head of Security, Jean Michel-Roger, and reports back to Reiji by escaping the facility and meeting him without being seen before returning to continue surveillance.

Tsukikage has incredible athletic abilities and they are one of the most notable features about his character. He can run up walls, jump incredible heights and distances, outrun a motorbike, perform amazing athletics and move so fast he seems to disappear while still being within human constraints. In addition to smoke bombs, Tsukikage has has access to many stereotypical ninja techniques, such as blending into the background using a simple sheet. He can also slip past armed guards and the view of other prisoners with ease and hide on a freight elevator by clinging to the bottom. This requires incredible strength and endurance, as said elevator is very slow and it goes through a shaft literal miles beneath the earth. These skills lend further evidence to his dedication to the Fuuma Clan's regimen, as it would have taken considerable focus to bring himself to this level.

Though a lot of Tsukikage is veiled by his mysterious nature, his duel style, his "Ninja" deck, and name tell a bit more about him. Tsukikage means "moon shadow”, and is a direct counterpart of his brother’s name, "Hikage", meaning “sun shadow”. This duality is further emphasised by their appearance (Hikage wears red, is right-handed and associated with the sun while Tsukikage wears blue, is left-handed and associated with the moon) and their duelling strategies: Hikage focuses on quickly summoning strong monsters, while Tsukikage protects by forcing the opponent to skip their Battle Phase (“My brother, Hikage, fended off the intruders with the brilliance of the sun, and I, like the moon, protected us and stalled the enemy.”). Tsukikage tends to play low and defensive (mirroring his actions off-field, gathering information in the shadows), using his cards to protect himself while slowly dealing damage using Action Cards - which he can easily grab with his Ninja abilities even on a motorcycle - constantly discarding them for the costs of his card effects. It is clear from this that despite how much of him is cloaked in shadow, his true nature is an honorable one, worthy of the title "ninja".

TLDR: Tsukikage is the most ninja to ever ninja
